As you can see, Greece is a peninsula located in the Mediterranean Sea. Unfortunately for the Ancient Greeks, Greece is covered by mountains, making it very difficult to farm. They had to rely on trade or conquering other lands to get enough food to feed their people. They traveled by boat on the ocean in order to trade, however, sailing was not easy. They had no compasses to direct them, so they used the stars for guidance.
It is also important to remember that Ancient Greece was divided up into many city-states. Each of these city-states had its own form of government, economy, and way of life.

Please listen to what Sir Isaac Newton has to say about Ancient Greece. Once you have watched the video, think about and try to answer the questions listed below.
Follow-up Questions:
- Why was Ancient Greece broken up into different city-states?
- Why did the city-states fight with each other?
- The United States of America is also broken up into many states. Sir Isaac Newton just informed us about the fighting that broke out between the city-states in Ancient Greece. Other than the Civil War, the states within the United States of America have cooperated peacefully. Why do you think that is?
